Worked Examples

What good advice is worth in pounds

Two situations we see often among London small businesses. Names are illustrative and figures use 2026/27 rules.

Example 1: Marcus, Consultancy Ltd, Hackney
Taxable profit before planning£60,000
Corporation tax: 25% less marginal relief of £2,850£12,150
Employer pension contribution paid before year end£10,000
Taxable profit after contribution£50,000
Corporation tax at 19% small profits rate£9,500
Corporation tax saved£2,650

Between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit, each extra pound of profit is taxed at an effective 26.5%. Marcus’s £10,000 contribution therefore saves £2,650, a quarter of its cost. The payment must be wholly and exclusively for the business, sit within the £60,000 annual allowance and be made before the year end. The money is locked in the pension until minimum pension age, so it suits cash he does not need soon.

Example 2: Aisha, Online Gift Shop, Croydon
Sales in the 12 months to 31 March 2027£96,000
Must tell HMRC by30 April 2027
VAT registration takes effect1 May 2027
She registers three months late. Sales May to July at £8,000 a month£24,000
VAT she owes on those sales: £24,000 × 20/120£4,000

Aisha never charged VAT on those sales, so HMRC treats her takings as VAT-inclusive and she pays the £4,000 from her own profit, before any penalty. Her accountant would have flagged the threshold months earlier, and she could have raised prices or registered on time.

FAQ

Small business accountant questions

How much does a small business accountant cost in London?
+
It depends on your turnover, the number of transactions, whether you are VAT-registered and whether you run payroll. DKAT quotes a fixed fee after a free consultation, so you know the cost before any work starts. Be cautious of any firm that quotes a price without asking about your records.
Do I legally need an accountant for my small business?
+
No. UK law does not require you to use one. You are still responsible for filing accurate returns on time: Self Assessment for sole traders, and annual accounts, a Company Tax Return and a confirmation statement for limited companies. Penalties apply to late or wrong filings, which is why most owners hire an accountant.
What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
+
A bookkeeper records your income and expenses day to day. An accountant prepares your statutory accounts and tax returns, advises on tax and structure, and deals with HMRC and Companies House for you. At DKAT the bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, accounts and tax work sit under one fixed fee.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
+
It depends on your profit, your risk and how you take money out. At lower profits a sole trader is often simpler and cheaper to run. As profit grows, a company can save tax, but employer National Insurance, dividend tax and extra filings reduce the gain. We model both for your numbers before you decide.
When must a small business register for VAT?
+
You must register when your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. Tell HMRC within 30 days of the end of the month you went over. Your registration takes effect on the first day of the second month after. You can register voluntarily below the threshold if it suits your customers and costs.
What happens if I file my company accounts late?
+
Companies House charges an automatic penalty for a private company: £150 if up to one month late, £375 up to three months, £750 up to six months and £1,500 after that. The penalty doubles if you are late two years running. HMRC charges separately for a late Company Tax Return.
Do you work with Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent?
+
Yes. We work with all MTD-compatible cloud software, including Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Sage and QuickFile. If you are still on spreadsheets or paper records, we recommend a package that fits your business and handle the move.
